Hi team!

What do you guys when you get a new device, either for home or for work purposes? 🙂

Personal Device:
Step one, remove bloatware, step 2 install Chrome, Firefox, and new Edge Chromium, step 3 install dev tools (Jetbrains Toolbox), step 4 update all device drivers/firmware.

Work device:
Clean install of Windows 10 (Don’t have time to deal with removing bloat), step 2 install chocolaty, step 3 run chocolaty automated installer for Chrome, Firefox, Edge Chromium, Adobe Reader, Office 365, MS Teams, Notepad++ and 7-ZIP, step 4 connect to domain, step 5 give to new user.

What do you use for doing this? I’ve created a custom Windows Image by editing the WIM files that auto-removes bloatware, I find it much more effective

FrinkMan I do this manually (search and hunt) I treat it like a little game on my personal devices. At work I don’t bother, I just fresh image the whole damn thing to raw Windows 10 and set the Consumer Features flag in registry to off before I connect the computer to the network.

Personal:

Remove bloatware
Install applications (usually stored on a Portable Hard Drive) and update as required. (Incl. Windows Updates)
Run Windows 10 Powershell to remove unwanted applications and change registry for tracking etc.
Update Drivers / Firmware
Install device-specific applications (depending on the role of the device)

Business:

Install from image.
Run powershell to ready the device to our pre-approved stage.
Install Office, antivirus and business applications that are not dished by GPO.
Disable power settings on the network adapters
Update as far as possible.
Add device to domain and run GPO.
Configure for end user (department-specific).
Full disk encrypt the device if portable or in specific departments.
Run Windows updates.
Test all applications.
Peer-review device, and prep additional equipment (keyboard / mouse / bag / etc)
Arrange installation.

phenomlab If only this were the answer to every solution, unfortunately end users don’t understand linux and linux doesn’t have a GPO like alternative (at least that I can find)

I’ve been using Windows since 1985 (yeah, I’m old), and Linux for the past 10 years.
